Vietnam is flourishing as a tourist destination - and no wonder. It has everything a traveller could possibly want: stunningly rugged mountains in the north, a river-based society in the south, gorgeous beaches all along the coastline, bustling cities full of colonial architecture, tiny villages of indigenous peoples and a fascinating history.

Both Vietnam's major cities are busy and hectic, from northern Hanoi's narrow, winding streets to southern Ho Chi Minh City's wide, colonial boulevards. Food-travel is becoming increasingly popular here as the world realises how delicious the cuisine is, and the cities are great places to sample the delights.

Hanoi, Vietnam's capital city, is a mesmerising place. Its Old Quarter is a maze of tiny, winding streets divided up by produce - find Silver Street and Silk Street here, among many others. Adjacent to the Old Quarter is the vast Hoan Kiem Lake, around which locals can be seen doing their early morning exercises and T'ai Chi, and evenings see locals and tourists alike heading to the nearby theatre for a traditional Water Puppet Show. Visiting the tomb of Ho Chi Minh himself, as he lies in state, is also as popular here as visiting the traditional pagodas.

Ho Chi Minh City, on the other hand, is all tree-lined boulevards and much more modern buildings, courtesy of the French. Known during the war as Saigon, the City of Sin, it today carries a colonial elegance and sophistication. A popular trip to make from here is to the Cu Chi tunnels, where you can experience for yourself the conditions of the Viet Cong during the Vietnam War.

But travel south of Ho Chi Minh City and you find a different world: the world of the Mekong Delta. On the banks of canals of this vast river are factories, traditional houses, floating markets and a simple, peaceful way of life, all populated by people who get around in sampans, wooden canoes. Monasteries, pagodas and cathedrals can be found in this part of Vietnam, too - a mix of religions for a tolerant nation.

Vietnam is varied and beautiful - and constantly a surprise.
