This curious blend of eastern and western architecture, bound up in bright and vibrant colours, dazzles at every turn, and the sheer scale of the churches and palaces speak volumes about Russia's previous wealth. Visit the famous Hermitage Museum - one of the world's largest collections of art accessed in the beautiful Winter Palace - or soak up breathtaking religious buildings. Climb to the dome of St Isaac's Cathedral for views over the Neva River, and marvel at the golden mosaics inside the fairytale esque Church on Spilled Blood. And no trip to St Petersburg is complete without an evening spent captivated by the Russian ballet.
Russia's capital, Moscow, is an enthralling, if at times daunting, place. It is a city of extremes, with the theatrical turrets of the Kremlin towering over Red Square at its heart.
