Often referred to as Europe's West Coast, Portugal has an old-fashioned charm, with medieval castles and picture-perfect villages scattered over meandering coastlines and flower-covered hillsides.

Castles, vineyards, sun-dappled days and a wonderfully laid-back pace of life are but some of Portugal's charms. Its Algarve may have attracted large swathes of visitors over recent years, but Portugal is so much more than a sand-and-sun resort destination, retaining a liberal helping of old-world flavour with its country-wide architecture and traditions that hail back to bygone days.
In Portugal's refined capital, Lisbon, shopping strips and historic landmarks are laced with a notably tranquil air when compared with many of its contemporaries across the continent. After seeing the Monument to the Great Discoveries on the Tagus River, Belém Tower or the Jeronimos Monastery, it doesn't take much to slip away from the crowds into some space of your own. For a touch of chic beach life, a visit to nearby Cascais, west of Lisbon, finds a former fishing village turned popular resort, with a collection of lively beaches, eateries and shops. On the other end of the scale, north of Lisbon lies Fatima, famous for its holy shrine.
Lisbon's main rival is Porto, an attractive city to the north of the country that's home to a city centre with UNESCO World Heritage status and one of the continent's oldest universities. Porto has experienced a palpable revamp over recent years, and now offers a thriving culinary scene, on-the-pulse nightlife and fashionable shopping. A couple of hours' drive away, find Pinhao, the hub of Portugal's Port winemaking region. Visit during the autumn grape harvest to see the peaceful town transform into a hive of activity.
Guimaraes in the north may no longer be Portugal's capital, but its status as a European Capital of Culture for 2012 shows it's still going strong, and throughout the year creative talents from across Europe are set to congregate amid the old city's romantic jumble of architecture.
So while Portugal may not have such instant associations as France does with classic romance or Spain with festive free spirit, this culturally rich European country, with its laid-back refinement and old-world charms, is a truly class act.
