Washed by the South Pacific, New Zealand's two main islands flourish in this remote corner of the globe. Magnificent green landscapes undulate for miles, punctuated by great lakes and snow-capped peaks, while the clear Pacific waters find fitting companion in miles of fantastic beaches.

North Island has New Zealand's capital Wellington, with its wealth of museums, cafes and thriving nightlife - as well as Auckland, New Zealand's largest city famous for its Harbour Bridge and Maori culture. The alluring beach-fringed Hibiscus Coast lies just to the north, while further along the peninsula find the Bay of Islands, a popular destination for sailing and big-game fishing. In the North Island's interior find Rotorua, a lakeshore city well known for its geysers, hot springs and mud pools.

South Island is larger but less populous, having the mountain chain of the Southern Alps running the entire length of its spine. Find Christchurch, New Zealand's second largest city and home to numerous parks, gardens and museums.

The sunny Marlborough region around Blenheim offers well-regarded vineyards and gorgeous alpine scenery. This land of high peaks, glaciers and gorges is spectacular enough to have doubled for Middle Earth in The Lord of the Rings film trilogy. The TranzAlpine railway between Christchurch and the west coast affords breathtaking views of this landscape, especially the section between Darfield and Arthur's Pass.

On South Island's west coast, the mighty Franz Josef Glacier descends from the Southern Alps all the way down to the coastal rainforest. North of this, the eroded limestone pillars of the Pancake Rocks near the small community of Punakaiki are another remarkable geological wonder. Inland, the Otago region is home to two of New Zealand's largest lakes, Wanaka and Wakatipu, as well as the resort of Queenstown. At the island's southwest tip, the Fiordland National Park's powerful wilderness comprises New Zealand's biggest national park. The most famous fjord here is Milford Sound, offset by Mitre Peak rising dramatically above it.

New Zealand's main islands certainly have their individual charms, but one quality experienced in bucket loads on both is the overwhelming sense that you really are in one of the most geographically spectacular spots on earth.
