Pulsating cities, inspiring landscapes and riotous colour every way you turn - India is a truly exciting place to be. Temples soar, festivals flourish and wildlife roams across this diamond-shaped expanse. More than anything else, though, it is India's people that make any visit unforgettable: crowded and poor India may be, but there is a vitality here that few other destinations can match.

Delhi, the hectic Indian capital, has a wealth of glorious Mughal-period buildings like the Red Fort, and the Jama Masjid - India's largest mosque - in its Old Town. To the south lies the city of Agra and one of the world's most iconic buildings, the Taj Mahal: an inspired white marble mausoleum that no photograph can ever do justice. Agra Fort, the Taj Mahal's sister monument standing nearby overlooking the Yamuna River, is also much acclaimed. More sumptuous Mughal architecture can be seen nearby at the beautifully preserved city of Fatehpur Sikri - once capital of India's Mughal Empire.

Jaipur in Rajasthan state, part of the Golden Triangle that also includes Delhi and Agra, and often referred to as 'the Pink City' because of its colour-washed buildings, is best known for its Hawa Mahal (Palace of Winds), a summer palace built for a Rajput ruler that has a unique and intricate five-storey facade. Just outside the city, the sandstone Amber Fort dominates the surrounding countryside from its craggy hilltop perch.

Further west, close to India's border with Pakistan, Jaisalmer has all that you might expect for a town on the edge of a desert - camels, sand dunes and an imposing fortress. Jodhpur, south of here, has a fortress too, but is probably better known for being 'the Blue City' because of the photogenic colour wash applied to some of its houses. Udaipur, in the far south of Rajasthan, is another fortified city with an exquisite City Palace and impressive Jagdish Temple, while Ranakpur, further north, is an important pilgrimage centre for the Jain faith.

India is vast, but its bounty is plentiful. Spiritual yet frenzied, intense yet sprawling, India is confounding, uplifting and thought-provoking all at once.
