The very mention of Egypt evokes powerful images - pyramids, ancient temples, sailboats on the River Nile and shimmering desert vistas. All these things are here, certainly, but this is only part of Egypt's mesmerising picture.
The Egyptian capital, Cairo, is a huge metropolis adorned with stunning Islamic architecture - as well as having the iconic pyramids of Giza on its doorstep. Cairo is also home to the ancient churches of Coptic Cairo and crowded colourful bazaars like that at Khan al-Khalili. Outside the city, in addition to the pyramids, there is also Memphis, the Old Kingdom capital sitting just south of Cairo.
Heading south along the River Nile, Luxor is central to some of Egypt's most magnificent temple complexes. The Temple of Luxor lies by the riverside in the heart of the city itself, while the impressive Karnak complex, with its massive stone pillars, stands just a few miles away. The West Bank, with numerous monuments like the Temple of Hatshepsut, is also home to the Valley of the Kings - tombs here include the burial chamber of the boy king Tutankhamun.
Even further south, on the east bank of the Nile, Aswan lies at the heart of Egypt's Nubia region. Although the city has no monuments, its setting is indisputably picturesque, with the palm-covered Elephantine Island midstream in the river and white-sailed feluccas moored along the corniche. Another river island just outside the city is home to Philae, a fascinating temple complex that was painstakingly relocated stone by stone from its former site when the Nile was flooded following the construction of the Aswan High Dam.
Equally impressive temples can be seen along other stretches of the Nile. Edfu, midway between Luxor and Aswan, is home to the Temple of Horus that was built during Queen Cleopatra's reign, while Dendera, north of Luxor, has a temple complex that includes the astonishingly well-preserved Temple of Hathor.
Egypt offers a baffling maze of intricate holy sites, world-famous landmarks and high-end comforts. Amid the blue skies and sunshine, along the Nile or in the heart of the cities, find centuries of Egypt's past waiting to be explored.
