For unspoiled countryside, spotless coastline and sophisticated cities look no further than Croatia. Once Europe's best kept holidaying secret, Croatia's charms are increasingly common knowledge. Among its many attributes, the country's waters have won three awards for the cleanest in the Mediterranean, and Croatia is also home to a must-see collection of UNESCO World Heritage sites.

Croatia's atmospheric capital, Zagreb, was born from a medieval city; cobbled streets lead past little cafes, and a neo-Gothic cathedral overlooks the Old Town. Walk through Zagreb's Upper Town to sample local cuisine and browse its bustling markets. Also known as the 'city of museums', Zagreb's cultural offerings make it an ideal stop off for those partial to the arts and archaeology.

Along the coast of the Adriatic Sea lies one of Croatia's oldest cities, Split. Once a Greek settlement, Split now brims with attractive buildings and busy shops. Its very existence is owed to the Emperor Diocletian who built his palace here - now a UNESCO World Heritage site with many original features.

While they might be a relatively recent discovery for the holidaying masses, European nobility have been escaping to Croatia's secluded islands for centuries. Even after being splashed across the world's glossy travel magazines, these islands still remain tranquil boltholes for an escape-it-all break.

Certainly worth a visit is the pretty walled town of Korcula, famed for being the birthplace of Marco Polo. For delicious views of sparkling sea, the Peljesac offers all you could ask for and more, while architecturally delightful Dubrovnik is a hub of baroque structures, 14th-century churches and many excellent restaurants.

Croatia is often praised for preserving its natural features, and its oldest and largest national park, Plitvice, is a great example of why. Here, 16 interconnected lakes glow with varying shades of inviting turquoise, rare birds rustle in the foliage, and winding hiking trails lead past misty waterfalls and through thick forest.

Croatia is a treasure trove of perfect greenery, and cultural and historic gems. From the moment you arrive it is clear why this previously unsung European country has caught the attention of holidaymakers across the world.
