No longer a danger zone, Cambodia's tourism industry is having a huge growth spurt. This spiritual and colourful country is being discovered by travellers - and they are pleased with what they find. Economically and socially, Cambodia is still recovering from the Khmer Rouge regime of the 1970s, but beautiful sites and welcoming locals are certainly helping it on its way.

Cambodia's prime attraction is the outstanding 12th-century Angkor Wat, the only half-Buddhist, half-Hindu temple complex of its kind, and the largest religious building in the world. Packed full of intricate carvings and statues, Angkor Wat has to be seen to be believed. The main temple complex receives many visitors, but travelling off the main track reveals more peaceful temples such as Banteay Srei.

The nearby town of Siem Reap is becoming an anomaly. The town itself retains a dusty charm, with a quaint covered market selling everything from fish and meat to clothes and pedicures, and a street full of restaurants for the tourists. Outside the town, however, high-rise hotels cater for the many busloads of visitors who want a higher-end Cambodian experience. Here, watch a traditional Apsara dance performance, an art that the local girls begin learning at the age of three.

Cambodia's capital, Phnom Penh, is a thriving, bustling city with many nods to both its colonial and its Khmer past, from the art deco central market to the temple of Wat Phnom, dating back to 1373. Take a tuk-tuk to see the
dazzling Royal Palace, visit the markets where international brand goods come straight from the factories to the stalls or, for a more sombre experience, head to the infamous Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum and the Killing Fields.

Cambodia's natural beauty is a delight - take a boat trip on the Tonle Sap Lake, and simply sit back and enjoy the view, and see floating markets and riverside villages showing traditional Cambodian ways of life.

Cambodia is on a journey, and as the country opens up further, there will doubtless be much more to entice and astound.
