Sun-filled days, dreamy coastline and a leisurely pace make the West Coast state of California a much-loved holiday destination. Often called the 'land of sunshine and opportunity', people have flocked to California ever since the gold rush years. Snap a close-up of that iconic Hollywood sign or pose like Marilyn Monroe on her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame - California was made for answering dreams.

San Francisco's grand Golden Gate Bridge is one of California's most recognised landmarks, greeting city visitors with its glowing towers. This is a varied and vibrant city, with neighbourhoods brimming with historical architecture and all manner of creative folk filling cosy cafes and intimate jazz and wine bars.

Leave the bustle of the city behind and hit the road on the Pacific Coast Highway - California's prime scenic driving experience. Starting in Monterey, this stretch offers 197km (123 miles) of photo-worthy views. En route, discover Carmel, one of California's most picturesque towns with a history of housing an arty community inspired by its Spanish relics and charming scenery.

Over in San Diego, Balboa Park's illustrious gardens are a highlight, as are simple pleasures such as walking along the harbour or indulging in a spot of shopping in the Gaslamp Quarter.

And, of course, there is Californian wine. The Napa Valley is California's celebrated wine country - a seemingly endless blanket of soft, rolling vineyards. Award-winning blends flow effortlessly from established wineries dating back to the mid-19th century.

The sheer scale of California's natural inland beauty is demonstrated with ease at Yosemite National Park. Gaze up at El Capitan, Yosemite's imposing granite cliff, and explore leafy trails amid assorted plant life - find ancient forest and rare foliage sprouting from this biologically diverse area. Animal residents include bears, deer and coyotes, and hawks and falcons can be seen gliding in the skies above.

No trip to California is complete without a visit to LA - Beverly Hills, to be exact. Gawp at celebrities' ostentatious mansions, place your hands in their cemented impressions at Grauman's Chinese Theatre, and gaze up at that iconic Hollywood sign while picturing Tinseltown in its heyday.

The ruggedly beautiful coastline curves northward of Los Angeles to San Francisco along the famous Big Sur coastal highway, one of the most scenic drives in the country. The San Francisco Bay Area is proudly presided over by San Francisco, the cosmopolitan city whose cable cars and Golden Gate Bridge are instantly recognisable.

California's best-known wine country extends north of San Francisco into the Napa and Sonoma Valleys, but excellent wine regions also flourish near Santa Barbara and San Diego.

Northern California is the land of giant sequoias and redwoods, waterfalls, whitewater rivers, forests, icy lakes and towering mountains. The California Gold Rush, which began in the Sierras in 1848, forever changed the state and brought new wealth as fortune hunters migrated en masse.

Los Angeles, the 'City of Angels' is the second-largest city in the USA and lives up to its reputation as 'the entertainment capital of the world', with all the dreams being made in Hollywood.

Orange County is home to one of the world's most famous attractions - Disneyland Resort - as well as 67km (42 miles) of beaches and the charming rural communities of the Santa Ana Mountains.

The Desert region, in the southeast, features expansive landscapes, brilliant skies, traces of pioneer history and glittering resort cities. From Death Valley, the lowest place in North America at 86m (282ft) below sea level, one can travel in the same day to California's Mt Whitney, the highest mountain in the continental United States, at 4,418m (14,494ft) elevation.
